Remembering a pet

Ways to Remember Your Dog or Cat After They Pass

There is no right way to remember a pet, and no right time to start. Some people want something on the wall straight away. Others need a few months. These are the ways people most often keep a dog or cat close, so you can pick the ones that feel like them.

Something to look at every day

  • A framed portrait. A portrait made from your favourite photo gives them a place in the house. Our Memorial portrait shows a pet with soft angel wings in golden light, and you can see a free preview straight away.
  • A favourite photo, printed. Pick one that looks like them, not the best-lit one. Print it large and frame it.
  • A photo book. Gather the years into one place, including the ordinary days. Those are often the ones you miss most.

Something to hold

  • A paw print or a nose print. Many vets will make one for you, in clay or ink.
  • A collar and tag. Framed in a small box frame with a photo, or kept somewhere safe.
  • A clipping of fur. If you're comfortable keeping it. Your vet can keep one for you if you ask.

Something that grows

  • A plant or a tree. In the garden, or a pot by the door if you rent.
  • A favourite spot. A stone, a bench or a small garden bed where they used to lie in the sun.

Something to do

  • Write it down. A letter to them, or a few pages about the day you met. It helps, even if you never read it again.
  • Mark their birthday or the day they came home. A walk, their favourite treat shared with a friend's dog, or simply a photo on the fridge.
  • A donation. To a shelter or rescue, in their name.

If your pet is still with you

If you're reading this while they're ill or old, take photos now, and not only of their face. Their paws, the way they sleep, the two of you together. A clear photo in good light is also all we need for a portrait later. Here's how to choose the best photo.
