Keep it short, use their pet's name, and share one real memory if you have one. That's all a pet sympathy card needs. Below are messages you can use as they are or make your own.
Short messages
- So sorry about [name]. They were lucky to have you.
- Thinking of you and [name] today.
- [Name] was one of a kind. Sending love.
- Such a good dog. Such a big loss. I'm so sorry.
- There will never be another [name]. Holding you close.
- Run free, [name]. With love to your whole family.
- No one gave a better welcome home than [name].
- Thinking of you. [Name] was family.
If you knew their pet
- I'll always remember [name] [stealing toast / sleeping on your feet / meeting us at the gate]. Thinking of you.
- Every visit, [name] made sure I felt welcome. I'm going to miss them too.
- [Name] had the best life with you. You gave them everything.
For a cat
- [Name] chose you, and that says everything. So sorry.
- The house will feel so quiet without [name]. Sending love.
For an older pet
- [Number] years of love. What a life you gave [name].
- [Name] was loved every day of their life. I'm so sorry.
A longer note
"I'm so sorry about [name]. I know how much they meant to you, and how much of your day was built around them: the walks, the dinner-time staring, the warm spot on the couch. They had a wonderful life because of you. I'm here if you want to talk, or if you'd rather just go for a walk. With love."
What to avoid
- "It was just a pet" or "you can get another one". To them, it wasn't, and they can't.
- Asking how they died, unless they bring it up.
- Long stories about your own loss. One line of "I've been there" is enough.
